Notes for our customers:
A lot of old properties have wooden doors which have 2, 3 and 5 Lever Mortice Dead Locks or Sash Locks on the front and back doors. These types of locks can be recognised by the type of key they have which looks like a paddle on the end of a long stem. Usually the lock itself with have the number of levers printed on the inside of the door frame where the locking bolt protrudes from. On this type of external door you should never have a 2 or 3 lever lock as they are of a low security rating and criminals can easily gain entry to them. An external door should always have a 5 Lever Mortice Dead or Sash Lock and in some cases this lock needs to be a British Standard Lock. This requirement is sometimes stipulated on an individuals insurance policy and if a non British Standard Lock is fitted to the door, then your insurance policy may be void. Taking this into account you should always check your insurance before changing any door locks and inform your Locksmith if it is a British Standard Lock that is required.
modern properties tend to have locking mechanisms on them. these are
long strips which run up the inside of your door and have either bolts
or hooks which protrude when you lift the handle as well as rollers
which move up or down the door into place. Once the key is turned the
bolts rollers and hooks lock into place sealing the door. These types of
locking mechanisms are much more popular on front and back doors today
as they engage with the door frame from top to bottom providing much
more security if the door is hit for example by a foot or a shoulder.
Theses types of locking mechanism are also used on patio/french style
doors which open outwards, in this instance you should also make sure
your locksmith has installed shoot bolts which come out of the top and
bottom of the door when the handle is lifted entering the door frame.
These shoot bolts are essential for proper security on any double doors.
